Starry Nights: Terracotta and Gold Cushions for Christmas

The second in our winter series is the fun one. Terracotta and gold glow by lamplight, and with a scatter of embroidered stars they are made for December, Christmas and New Year.

And you do not have to start again. Keep your rust, caramel and cream cushions and simply add a few stars.

You can now choose cushions by colour, so browse all our terracotta and orange and gold cushions in one place.

Maison Casamance room shot: Ness Jaune Or on a rust sofa with Silhouette and Ness bolsters

Stars after dark

Ness in Jaune Or on a rust velvet sofa, with stripes, a chevron bolster and a star bolster on the rug. Gold and terracotta glow by lamplight.

Start with the stars. The new Ness in Jaune Or is a rich mustard gold velvet scattered with cream stars, as a 40 x 60 cm cushion or a slim 50 x 16 cm bolster. Lay a bolster across the front of a group for another dimension, like the new Silhouette in Ocre Beige on the sofa, a zebra-like chevron in beige and ochre velvet.

Pick up the rusty sofa with velvet. Dolce Vita in Terre de Sienne is a cotton velvet in warm terracotta, and Manade in Cuivre a rusty copper with a vintage print, so it looks more like well worn leather than new velvet. Manade in Jaune Or is more antique brass than yellow, so the scheme glows rather than shouts, and Cote Lin in Ocre adds a plain mustard linen with a cream piped edge.

Then bring in stripes and pattern. The new Haute Lice in Terracotta is a fine slubbed stripe of cream, clay and rust, and the new Killin in Noir Beige lines up black, white and orange stripes on off white, in two sizes. Nimbus in Fauve scatters tan velvet shapes across cream, a little like an animal print, Iridis in Multico Neutre has long tropical leaves stitched in brown, ochre and grey, and Pae in Noir Ocre is a woven tapestry of ochre, rust and sage leaves on black. Halo in Cuivre Noir, a round cushion banded in copper, black and cream, is the most graphic of all.

Finally, add something dark to ground it all. Opulence in Bleu Nuit is a ribbed midnight navy velvet and Cabourg in Carbone a near black rib, and next to either one the gold looks brighter.

Up close, it is all about the stars. Every Ness star is embroidered in wool with a contrasting centre: cream stars on mustard gold velvet in Jaune Or, deep magenta stars on soft olive in Vert Olive, and burgundy centred stars on pale Noix. Do not try to match them. Thrown together on a chair, the three colours look like a box of Christmas decorations.

Then add something graphic. The new Silhouette bolster in Ocre Noir is a zebra-like chevron in black and gold velvet, and Odea in Naturel Noir has fine black stripes of different widths across natural linen, like a line drawing. On the wire chair, Killin stripes sit beside the new Sami in Mordore, a long, shaggy golden pile, and on the floor the new Clyde in Mordore is a soft golden wool with a cream whip-stitched edge.

Maison Casamance Nepal boucle throws in rust and ivory

Finish with a throw. The Nepal throws are a soft, nubbly bouclé edged in black and white, and they come in Ivoire and Ambre. For this scheme I would choose Nepal in Ambre, a warm rust, or Ivoire to keep it light.

The best thing about stars is that they are not just for Christmas. Gold and terracotta carry on happily into January, so add a Ness cushion or two to what you already have and the sofa feels new for the whole winter.
